Obtained only by purchasing “All Star” candy bars in the St. Louis area over a six month period, the 1923 E123 Curtis Ireland Candy issue was a promotion in which the company distributed ONL baseballs to the person who submitted the “greatest number of different pictures and each one of the 10 persons having the greatest number of the same picture”. Due to the lack of available copies in the hobby, this campaign was obviously a success. Graded 10 Poor 1 by SGC, the offered 1923 E123 Curtis Ireland Candy Ty Cobb is the only example of the Hall of Famer to be judged by the third-party service. The design replicates the 1922 V100 Willard’s Chocolates series and features a horizontal image of the “Georgia Peach” offering at a fat pitch. Although surface creasing along with glue residue and paper loss are consistent with the technical assessment, the winning combination of scarce issue and the Class of 1936 subject overwhelms any imperfection.
Note: There is also only one example of this card graded by PSA (it is a VG 3).
