The last remaining component of a once-unbeatable Bronx franchise, Mickey Mantle continued to warrant All-Star status and recognition on MVP ballots as his Yankees landed in unfamiliar second division territory. The offered game-used bat was issued to Mantle during the latter portion of his magnificent career. Turned circa 1965, this Hillerich & Bradsby “K55” (32-oz/35”) white ash weapon has a “SPLINE” identifier just to the right of the pronounced center brand. Scarcely seen, “Spline” bats were introduced for a short period during the mid-1960s and sent to players during spring training for experimental purposes. This particular example shows heavy use with ball and stitch marks about the barrel, as well as a 16” H-shaped handle crack that has been secured by batboy nails. Additionally, there is a small chip on the knob, and handle tape has been removed. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from John Taube, PSA/DNA that states the bat to be authentic and manufactured for the New York Yankees, though use by Mantle is possible but cannot be confirmed.
