While Willie Mays earned his fair share of hardware throughout a remarkable career, the offered prize is a most unusual reward. Bestowed upon the coast-to-coast Giant great during the 1971 season, his 20th and final full season with the franchise, this silver-plated goblet served as a fitting tribute to Mays’ diamond exploits. Standing 8-1/2 inches tall, the cup has an engraved proclamation on the curved chalice portion which reads: “TO WILLIE MAYS – WORLDS GREATEST BASEBALL PERFORMER – FROM STEVIE CHRISTY – WORLDS YOUNGEST BASKETBALL PERFORMER.” Christy, incidentally, was a young basketball aspirant whose dreams came to fruition as he was allowed to take the court with the Harlem Globetrotters. Crafted by “Sheridan” (as evidence by the stamping on the base’s underside), the item has expected age-induced oxidation, yet still presents nicely as a unique “Say Hey” heirloom.
